can you give dogs penicillin? to keep your dog from getting infection after they get bitten, can you give them penicillin?

katie =D replied: "doubt it.....if you gave me penicillin i would break out im allergic to that stuff!"

dogs and penicillin? I have a 40lb 4 month old golden retriever that looks like he might have an infected lip. anyone know the dosage for penicillin or if it is even safe for dogs at all?

Alli replied: "You should always talk to a veterinarian before giving any medication. He may not even have an infection at all. And sometimes penicillin isn't the right antibiotic and won't do any good. I think you should take your dog into the vet so they can determine if he needs any medication, and what medication he needs."

NorthernGirl replied: "Penicillin is absolutely safe to use in dogs. I know the dose, but I won't give it to you over the 'net. In order for antibiotics to be properly dosed and prescribed, the animal needs to have an established relationship with a licensed veterinarian. If his lip is truly infected, there are other things in addition to antibiotics that should be done, so just take him to see a vet. It'll be worth it in the long run. Besides, at 4 months of age, he's due for his rabies vaccine...."

sillygoose replied: "dogs do take penicillin. and dose the same as a 40 lb child. a child is usually 1/2 that of an adult. but penicillin is not the first choice to kill a skin infection. call a pharmicist and ask what is the dose for a 40 lb child."

Susana M replied: "Be careful!! Some dogs, like some humans, are allergic to peniciline. Talk to a vet first."

manoj g replied: "Visit you may find answer of your query"

amccoy1962 replied: "Penicillin is safe to give to most dogs, but not all, as some can be allergic to it just like in humans. I also know the right dosage to give to a 40 pounds dog, BUT it is a prescription antibiotic, and it shouldn't be given to anybody prior to the doctor/vet's approval. You need to have your dog checked out by a vet first...don't you want to know why your dog has an infected lip???? Also you said "it might have" so you really don't know it. Never give dogs medications without a proper diagnose. Dogs build up immunity to medications very fast, and you don't want to give some not knowing if it needs or not, because when the time comes where it'll need to be on meds, there's the risk that it wouldn't help anymore."

sweetvalenciagirl replied: "The best solution is to go to a vet, or at least call your vet and speak to them. No vet is going to become rude or obnoxious if you call them and ask them what to do when your dog has an infected lip. I know my vet tells you well you need to do these steps at home, if they don't work the next step is to bring your dog in (unless immediate attention is required then they say bring your dog in). I know there are a wide range of medications that a vet can prescribe for illnesses, and penicillin may or may not be one of them. Good Luck"

how do I administer penicillin to my dog for an eye infection? My weenie dog has goop in his eyes all day and night. I don't know whether to give the penicillin in his muscle, orally or just under the skin. So, I've tried orally and it's not working. What should I do?

Barkley B replied: "Take your dog to see a licensed veterinarian!!! This type of infection could blind your dog. Antibiotics are administered according to type of infection. First, the infection will need to be quantified. Then, proper medical procedures applied in the form of oral and or injection. Most likely injection. Pets need to see doctors just like we humans do from time-to-time. Please don't try and save a few bucks when your pet's vision is at stake."

jealbaroma replied: "I think penicillin is mostly used for bacterial infections. However I think your doggie may need an eye ointment, something that can be drooped into the eye. He may have something in his eye than you cannot see, that has irritated him, and now there is a discharge. If you can't get to the vet, maybe go to your local feed store and see what they suggest. Feed stores usually have med's for dogs."

TweetyBird replied: "Again, please post dog questions in the Pets category. This is for poeple."

can I give my dog penicillin vk instead of ampacillin? my dog has a chronic problem that the vet prescribes ampicillin for but I am on disability and my husband has been on layoff for 4 months and cannot afford to take her to the doctor. Would it be ok to give her the penicillin instead?

walking lady replied: "I would never, ever change a dog's meds without the vet's ok. Why not phone your vet and ask - he won't charge you for a phone call and you won't be endangering your dog."

Mama replied: "Short answer - NO! If you are on Benefits the PDSA will treat your animals. Check them out. Otherwise most vets will agree for you to pay your bill off in instalments if you explain the situation. Far rather treat this dog appropriately than give him human drugs (and how do you know what is the correct doseage) and run into a potentially life-threatening situation which could end up costing its life, or costing you even more"

zeussy22 replied: "Absolutely not."

alassinsane_31 replied: "Penicillin is a very broad spectrum antibiotic and quite safe in the correct dosage. If you play around with differant drugs and wrong doses your pet will form a resistance to them so they dont work as well. If your dog has been off meds for atleast a week I would google the info on your ampicillin - strength for example. and compare it to the brand of penicillin, strength and usage. You may find that the drugs you have mentioned are the same active ingrediant, but differant brand names. So long as you give the correct dose and a proper course you should be right. Generally the minimum course is 5 days, twice a day. It wouldnt hurt to ring a Vet and ask tho! :) You could ring a differant clinic if you are embarressed to ask your own Vet due to the money woes."

Tiken replied: "Jojo- just look it up on the net "canine penicillin facts / dosage" - the online pet pet pharmacies will give you the dosage-- ampacillin may very well be in the same family as penicillin- check it out though- most people are afraid to ask their vets- but taking care of our animals is our responsibility - its an interesting fact that people with livestock can get antibiotics for their cattle for just about anything that they suspect might be wrong with them- they sell "combotics" over the counter in many feed stores- Just look up "canine penicillin facts" or use "dosage" ampecillin sounds like its in the same family as penicillin- don't be afraid to use any resource you can - your responsibility is to treat your dog- the internet gives up some amazing facts- even the vet manual is on line free. Don't hand over all your authority to people who can't trust themselves to make decisions for their animals -you are on the right track-"

Can my dog nurse her puppies if she is on Penicillin ? My Dog is on Penicillin is it okay for her to nurse her puppies? Dont want a lecture or questions just the answer

AUSSIEMOM replied: "well , CERTAINLY you told your vet that your dog was nursing a litter ,,,before he prescribed the meds"

Rayven-Fried Sea Kittens Anyone? replied: "Pick up the phone and call your vet. Why are you asking COMPLETE AND TOTAL strangers most of whom not squat about breeding and less about veterinary medicine about a question that needs to be directed to the VET who put your dog on the antibiotics in the first dang place?! Seriously how much sense does that make. ETA: and the fact you would trust the health and well being of your pups to strangers is both sad and frightening. ETA: The article from Improv"

Stalkers are cowardly thieves replied: "sigh...........WHY would the vet GIVE it if it was dangerous???? WHY do you imagine strangers-on-line know better/more than VETS????"

firestarter replied: "Yes. Personally, I was on Penicillin and nursed. It's one of the few antibiotics that doesn't harm newborns. Dogs should not be any different. Have a nice day and I hope your dog gets better soon."

rescue member replied: "No lecture - but why are you asking complete strangers for opinions on something as important as this when you should be asking your vet? Your vet did prescribe this penicillin and did see the dog for whatever problem she is getting this antibiotic for, didn't he? This question is downright scary - call your vet, get this dog vetted, instead of collecting opinions from strangers. Firestar, you are being kind without doubt, but when you took the antibiotics I am quite sure they had been prescribed by your doctor and you asked whether nursing your baby while on them was safe. Did this gal ask her vet?"

Amanda replied: "I would think not. But it would be best for you to call your Vet and ask. What ever the mother dog takes in is going to be given to the puppies through the mothers milk. Good luck.."

TN2Vegas replied: "You need to call the vet about this and while your at it, schedule an appointment to have your dog spayed."

DeeDawg replied: "isn't this a question for your vet?"

R.I.P. Gigi! Praying For Zoe! replied: "This is the perfect question to ask the vet, who prescribed the Penicillin and is taking care of your dog."

ImprovChick replied: "You need to talk to your vet. I don't care if you don't want to hear that, but you're going to get conflicting answers and the only way to know for sure is to ask the expert, even through a quick phone call. The woman who just answered said yes, I say NO--http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=0+1303&aid=856--because that website says you shouldn't. And as long as there is ANY doubt as to whether or not it will hurt the puppies, there's no way. You NEED to talk to your vet."

JenVT replied: "I assume that your vet knows she is nursing? Call them just to double check, but when I go to the vets, I see the same one every time, so they know my dog's whole history. Maybe not all practices are like that..."

☆♥ gяσσνу ¢нαяℓ ♥☆ replied: "No."

Marie P replied: "Call your vet and make a spay appointment while your asking about the penicillin. GEEZ!"

Is it bad if I give my dog 2 penicillin shots? He has a really really bad infection,3 legs are swollen and its full of puss. Cannot afford the vet at the moment. It should be obvious that, that is why i asked

xCh34pSh0tx replied: "lawl"

C. Jean replied: "VET, NOW "Cannot afford the vet at the moment. It should be obvious that, that is why i asked" ... then get the dog to a new home. It is suffering & in pain and if you cant afford to take care of your family member you need to put it into a situation where it can be helped. Would you keep your child home from the hospital if they had a life threatening injury?"

Sarah S replied: "What did your vet say?"

Cowbell Fever replied: "Yes, it's bad. You should never ever treat a dog yourself, this dog needs to see a vet, asap. Use your brain."

bookish replied: "You can give penicillin shots? Please take this poor, sick dog to a vet. BTW, you mean "pus.""

PJ replied: "Take him to the vet. If you aren't a vet - you shouldn't administer medicine to the dog."

DeeDawg replied: "a VET must administer shots if you must ask this. shots should only be given to your dog by someone who knows what they're doing. it absolutely ASTONISHES me that people ask advice like this from folks they have never even met before."

soccerugbystarr replied: "...you really shouldn't be giving your meds yourself unless your vet or vet showed/ told you how....i'd bring him to your vet imediately"

CassieP replied: "I don't think your dog's condition is something that can be treated at home without the oversight of a veterinarian. I suspect your dog is probably feeling pretty horrible and in pain. You might be able to work out an arrangement with your dog's veterinarian to see if you can barter something (goods or services) in exchange for medical attention for your dog. You could try calling the local Humane Society and see if there is some way they could help you. Good luck to you and your dog."

Lauren Elise replied: "no, you can't give your dog penicillin yourself, unless you were instructed to do so by a vet. you are caring for a living, breathing animal. i'm sorry, but if you cannot afford to give your dog the care it needs, it needs to go to someone who is able to do so."

terrah(: replied: "first off, you shouldnt own an animal if you arent in the financial situation to get him to a vet in times of an emergency such as this. reconsider your pet's home... second of all, there are some emergency clinics, especially in larger cities, that can help your pet. google them. also, consider investing in pet insurance. it's like 12-20 bucks a month, and over time could save your dogs life and your wallet."

Is Penicillin ok to give to your dog? My female german shepard has a bladder infection, again. On the bottle it says "PENICILLIN V POTASSIUM TAB 500MG" Is it safe? Will it help her infection?

sweetgurl replied: "well if it was given to you by a vet then yeah, but if it isn't then you should check with a vet, not ANSWERS"

Dory the Fish replied: "yes it is the same thing but you dont know how much is to much or to little play it safe and get some from the vet they know how much to give her"

Phoenix replied: "Did you get it from your vet? For this particular dog? If not, then no, it is not safe- take her to the vet and give her whatever the vet prescribes."

Labrdogs Canine Kids replied: "if your vet gave you this for her infection then yes it would be ok, if they didn't then call the vet and get the right medication for the infection"

Goldengal replied: "I would not give it to your dog unless your vet has perscribed it. There are many different types of bacterial infection dogs can get and one antibiotic will cover that particular type of infection. If your vet didn't give that to your dog for that type of infection than NO I would not give it to my dog."

DP replied: "Assuming that you are correct in your diagnosis Dr... Should you be giving something that you aren't sure about, don't know how much to give, and are relying on strangers to give you proper direction??"

dizneyland_fan replied: "only if the vet says OK - don't just give her medication, you might kill her!"

Tigger replied: "If the penicillin is prescribed for her, yes. Otherwise, the person that it was prescribed for should be taking it instead. Keep in mind that: 1) Some people (and animals!) react badly to penicillin. 2) Some bacteria are penicillin-resistant, and not all disease-causing agents are are vulnerable to penicillin. 3) If the person that the medicine was originally prescribed for hasn't taken all of it, there is a chance that some of those nasty little germs are still alive, and will breed a generation of disease-causing agents that will be more resistant to the penicillin than the original strain was. Take your dog to the vet and try to find out why she is having chronic infections. And check the stores for a food that can help her: There are pet foods that are formulated for little animals with such problems. Good luck."

mups mom replied: "only if your vet gave it to you but I'm wondering if you found this in your cupboard....there are other antibiotics that are generally preferred. too much or too little potassium can cause problems."
